Kenbridge, Virginia
Melanie Delores Jones was born on July 24, 1964, in Richmond, Virginia, and transitioned from this life on February 2, 2026. Though she has laid down her earthly burdens, she leaves behind a legacy rich with love, strength, faith, laughter, truth, and a presence that will never be forgotten. During her youth, Melanie moved to Kenbridge, Virginia, where she was raised and educated through Lunenburg County Public Schools, planting roots that would grow deep and steady.
Melanie was the kind of woman who made you feel safe just by being near her. She carried a gentle spirit wrapped in quiet resilience, and she had a way of loving people that felt steady, intentional, and real. Her life was centered on caring for others-- not loudly or for recognition, but faithfully and consistently. She believed deeply in family, loyalty, and showing up, and she lived those values every single day.
Known for her straightforward, no-nonsense demeanor, Melanie was lovingly known as "Madea" to family and friends. She believed the truth should be spoken plainly, because honesty, in her eyes, was an act of love. She would remind you to "fix your mouth and save your teeth," a gentle but firm warning to choose your words wisely. And when life got messy, as it often does, she'd say, "Folks gonna talk until the day you die. Hell, they talked about Jesus--and you ain't better than Jesus." Her words lingered long after they were spoken, because they were rooted in faith, wisdom, and lived experience.
Melanie loved God deeply and without apology. She often reminded anyone who would listen that God is the answer. Her faith wasn't something she performed--it was something she leaned on. It guided how she loved, how she forgave, and how she endured even the hardest seasons of her life.
She was a devoted and hardworking woman who served faithfully at the Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation until she was diagnosed with ALS. Even then, Melanie fought the hardest fight with courage, grace, and determination. She faced unimaginable challenges with dignity and strength, never losing her compassion or her concern for others. Even when her body grew tired, her heart never did.
Above all else, Melanie was a mother--and she wore that title with pride. Her daughter, Jalessa Jones, and her son, Antonio Jones (Malinda), were the absolute joy of her life. She loved her children fiercely and unconditionally, pouring into them wisdom, strength, and encouragement. Her sacrifices were quiet but countless, and her love shaped their lives in ways that will echo for generations.
Melanie also shared a beautiful and loving partnership with her devoted fiance, Robert Eugene Ragsdale, Sr. Together, they built a blended family rooted in love, respect, and unity. Melanie embraced her children by heart--Robert Ragsdale, Jr., Roderick Ragsdale, and LaKisha Ragsdale--loving them fully and without distinction. To her, family was never about blood alone; it was about connection, commitment, and showing up.
She was a proud and loving grandmother who found pure joy in her grandchildren: A'Kiyrah Taylor, Nautica, JaQuan, Geontra, Kawonte, RahJai, J'Miya, Camina, D'Ziya, Loyalty, A'Zariyah, and Zy'Ayre. They were her sunshine, her laughter, and her reason to keep going. Even in her hardest moments, their voices and smiles brought her comfort, peace, and light.
Melanie delighted in life's simple pleasures--cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, listening to Luther Vandross, and gathering loved ones around a table filled with good food and even better conversation.
And anyone who knew her knew this truth: Melanie made the best macaroni and cheese. It was more than a dish--it was love baked into every bite, comfort served warm, and home on a plate.
Her presence brought calm. Her voice brought reassurance. Her love left an imprint that time cannot erase. She was a listener, a nurturer, a protector, and a steady place to land when the world felt heavy.
Melanie was preceded in death by her parents, Nora Mae Winn Jones and David Lee Jones; her beloved son, Travis Leonard Jones; and her brothers, William "Rat" Jones (Linda), David "Buckey" Jones, and Howard Jones (Mary).
She leaves to cherish her memory her fiance, Robert Eugene Ragsdale, Sr.; her children, Jalessa Nicole Jones and Antonio Lamar Jones; her children by heart; her cherished grandchildren; her siblings, Brenda Jackson (Cecil), Kenneth Jones (Mary), Helen "Vonnie" Jones, Tony Jones, Timothy Jones, and Marci Lewis (Nick); one surviving aunt, Albertha Horton; one surviving uncle, Fredrick Douglas Winn; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who were forever changed by her love.
Though Melanie Delores Jones is no longer physically with us, her spirit lives on--in the lives she shaped, the truth she spoke, the faith she stood on, and the love she gave so freely. And if she were here right now, she'd tell us to lift our heads, fix our mouths, trust God--and keep going.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
